Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 36

I wanted to hear the "great power" of my 08 V6 Mustang
so i took off the muffler for a day, sounds cool in person, and very loud,
but there was a very annoying sound vibrations at 2,500-3,000 rpm
like a frequency of the sound that was annoying to the ear.
And with exhaust less restrictied i expected to feel a little bit difference. Nothing happened,
it feels more difference when running on a cold day.

You need to preform an air filter/box delete at the same time to get real power

You still have factory exhaust otherwise? Mufflers aren't a restriction, catalytic converters are.

yes i put again the stock exhaust. i have a friend without catalytic converters, on a V8 and the bad thing about that is the smell

I actually prefer killing my brain cells slowly so the smell is okay with me. I also don't have a lot of stop-and-go traffic on my daily drive so no big deal there either.

I wanted to hear the almighty roar of a 2.5L straight 6, so I removed all of the exhaust and put this from the headers back:

Kinja'd!!!

It's fun to be loud.

OEM exhausts don't restrict much if any flow on most cars. Most people don't understand how horsepower works and are designed to actually improve driveability when they do. Generally you can't even make enough power outside the margin of error for a dyno without removing intake and exhaust restriction (that would be the catalytic converter, bends, and going wider pipe), which just moves the power points. You are trading off low end torque for top end HP in such tiny amounts you can't really feel it. Most people get a placebo effect due to the sound: it's louder to they imagine more power. The OEM parts are picked to match what the cams can actually move in most cases... so unless you are changing a lot of other parts, you aren't gaining power.

The last time we rented the dyno for a day we proved completely removing the exhausts didn't really gain power worth noting and lost overall power generally. The only exception were turbo cars... they don't care about the back pressure because the turbo provides enough (at least with the ones we had on hand). We will be going back this winter to play again hopefully as soon as my Z is done and my buddy gets the blower fabbed up on his car. This time we hope to bring a decent camera and upload something worth watching... cellphones didn't work at all with how loud it was and the vibrations.

Aw shucks, just a photo of some 3" exhaust tubing. Really loud.

Removing exhaust components on a modern vehicle without remapping the ECU for the reduced back pressure actually causes the engine to make: LESS power, HIGHER emissions and SHORTENS the engines life.

Look at the bumper of the idiots with the Civics who put on the "coffee can" mufflers - right above where the exhaust exits the bumpers are black with soot - this is al lthe unburned fuel and hydrocarbons.

A modern fuel injected motor uses O2 sensors to measure the quality and amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream, when you remove major components from the exhaust it lowers the back pressure to the point where no acceptable reading can be made - so then the ECU puts the engine into a 'limp' mode which makes the engine run rich and dump tons of excess fuel into the combustion cycle.

Some people should quit while they are ahead .....

I gotcha. I think the 4.0 V6 sounds kind of good. Almost like an inline-6 with some more bite to it.

Most panel filters will move the same or more air than a deleted box & cone filter swap. Again, it's mostly a placebo effect for most applications: engine makes more noise, driver gets tingly in the pants. On the cars that do gain slightly, there is usually a trade off (running rich, running lean, etc) that actually makes the power band dip elsewhere. The real regulation is still from the intake manifold, head, and valves/cams. This has been tested quite a lot.

yes, inside the car it sounds good, but with the stock exhaust doesnt make that much noise on the outside of the car, i think you'd hear more the tires rolling on the pavement than the engine.

damn, your buddy must have a great time driving and it must make a proper noise. Tell him to never get rid of it, i think Ford's going to fuck up with the next mustang, well i don't like the renders that are coming out on Jalopnik.

Was also the case with my '08 GT as well. I like the assumption that people want a sports car, but that it should sound like a Prius.

I was just explaining why you didn't feel any difference. My Z is turbo (SR20DET swap) my buddies is a VH45DE swapped Z32 300ZX that is getting a blower right now and once he has time, he wasn't to try a compound turbo/SS setup (he fabs his own parts).

I will be doing a full post about my car as soon as it is done and I am going to try to get him to do one as well. We are planning to go race in the Silver State Classic for fun next year, so we should have some videos of us messing them the cars if all goes well and we still have money to do the event.

Ha! That just means you need a supercharger too! Or better yet go turbo so he can pull on you at first and then you can just freight train past him on the top end.

If you have a turbo you can sometimes gain response doing that... otherwise it's just a good way to fill the intake with grit and dust ;) It will be one of the most expensive vacuum cleaners around ;)

oh,ok i thought you hadn't read the post, some people just go straight to the video.
For me, the first part id modify in my car is the differential, Power would be useless if i cant put the power on the ground, V6 come with open diff, well the '05-10 models

Suit yourself. I dyno'd 604 to the wheels and have 4.10s lol. But a 295 rear helps keep it down to the ground.

What tires are you running?

Don't think I've ever even seen a picture of the RTR's on a 95, and not on a 97 in person. Which is surprising cause I love them so much and they aren't super radical or anything. I had the stockers plasti dipped first. But I digress. 40R19-275 Pirelli P Zeros all around. Not in love with them but got a deal. Probably will try some Nittos out when I get the chance

I meant the SN95 body style, as in 99-2004. The S197 body style is yours, 2005-present.

But yeah I'd try some Nittos next. I had NT555s on my 2008 GT. They did okay with 4.10s and a built motor. Probably close to power in what your car makes. The NT555s don't hook well until they're warm though.

I have some Nitto Invos now and they're worlds better than the NT555s. They're only offered in a few sizes though, so you may not be able to find anything suiting. Otherwise I haven't tried many other street tires. The Toyo R888s are fantastic for a track tire if you ever run anything dedicated, otherwise I'd say NT555s or Invos would be great as a street/weekend warrior tire.

I was abbreviating styles not years but yes, my bad.
Thanks for the suggestions. I may have to sign up for another drift day to help progress the wear on the pirellis aka 3 hours to ruin some tires :-)

Yeah, the LSD options for my Z were less than optimal. The current plan is to rebuild a newer diff with a Quaife unit. As soon as I know my driveline and everything is fine it will be the shipped off. You are on the right track if you are going to get the car ready for the other upgrades rather than just throw them on and hope for the best.

Oh my bad, I apologize then.

And no problem on the suggestion. Tires are a make or break it kind of deal for me. Not easy to take off once you have them on so I'm definitely a big researcher on tires before I buy them.

If you decide to do a drift day just make sure you record it and post it here. That's all we ask. :)

Already have one recorded on the youtubes where I wasted my stockers while the RTR's were in the garage fresh. Not Vaugh Gitten Jr status, not by a long shot, but for a first time out I was pleased :-) was waiting for authorship status before posting it

We'd gladly watch regardless! I've yet to do adrift event, other than some hooning on the track but never a real drift event. I have my old wheels and tires still so I probably should, but I know it'd just make my dream of building a drift-spec Foxbody even worse.

We. Have. The. Same. Dream! I was pretty much the only one there not in a silvia/240sx/etc POS missle. A couple 350Z and 2 FRS that were also street cars. Lots were trailered in. Also fuel for the fire:

Yes! I've had that dream for a while now, but haven't quite pulled the gun yet. However, I fell like a foxbody would be an even better candidate than a silvia or 240 in every way possible. They're cheap as hell, parts are plentiful, you can motor swap pretty much anything into it and there will be parts already available for it, and they're a great platform for drifting. My problem is justifying another car that won't be daily driven lol.

Oh and obligatory rebuttal video:
